Eco Learning Labs is a small design team and consulting firm run by Earthman Dan, a passionate conservationist and science comminutor. Dan is an award-winning nature filmmaker, cross-cultural wildlife educator, UIUX and graphic designer. As founder of Fauna in Focus, Dan produced the award-winning Cambodian Nature Film, and designed and opened Cambodia’s first ever Nature Discovery Center.

Today, Dan runs Eco Learning Labs, is setting up a YouTube channel to promote wildlife conservation, is writing a novel, and works for National Audubon Society as the Director of Rio Salado Audubon Center in Phoenix, Arizona. There, Dan is helping bring the nature center into the modern era with new exhibits, interpretive learning trails and educational signage and installations to create a more immersive learning atmosphere.

Most biologists are not known for their powers of communication… or for a visually aesthetic approach to design. After many years of watching conservationists struggle to connect with their audiences, I began putting my interest to use. This began with my award-winning Nosy Maitso film, aimed at reaching rural audiences in Madagascar.

I was lucky enough to grow up in an artsy family. Alongside my main focus in science, anthropology and primate conservation, I also studied fine art, architecture and graphic design. As a conservationist, science communicator and environmental educator for nearly two decades I have developed visual media and design skills to tell conservation stories in meaningful and impactful ways. From board games and coloring books, to award-winning films or interpretive learning centers, there are so many new and exciting ways to engage and connect with audiences.

Building The Team

I’ve had the privilege to have worked in some incredible biodiversity hotspots. This has given me a unique approach to cross-cultural communications, education and outreach. Throughout my career, I have discovered the importance of fostering local partnerships, lifting up local voices, and helping passionate conservationists focus their crafts and stories for impactful conservation work. This has lead to collaboration with some incredible scientists, designers, filmmakers and story tellers that I have worked with for many years. Today, we are Eco Learning Labs.
